CNN Student News Reporter
Guidelines & Requirements
Once a week a student is selected, at random, to present a student news report in front of the class the following week. As a class we will watch a segment of CNN Student News on Friday mornings. After the completion of the segment, I will pull a name out of the “can of sticks” and that student will have one full week to research and prepare a news presentation in front of the class the next Friday.
In order to successfully complete this assignment, the selected student news reporter will need to select a current news headline and research at least other articles related to this headline. Students may select a news headline from the following sources:
After the research and selection process has been completed, students will need to prepare a new speech presentation to deliver in front of the class that will last 3-5 minutes of full speaking. 3x5 notecards may be used to help cue the speaker. No other source of notes will be allowed. I suggest that students dress up a bit, if possible, on presentation day, but this is not a requirement.
Students may prepare with visual or audio aids to help support the headline and audience engagement. Students may add:
Headline topics can be from local news sources or world news. The headline can be a local topic or a global issue. Topics can be related to:

- Newspaper (The Sacramento Bee, Sierra Sun, etc.)
- Online news sites (KCRA.com, CNN.com, MSNB.com, Foxnews.com, CNNStudentnews.com, espn, etc.)
- Current edition Magazines (Newsweek, Time, etc.)

- Power Point or Google Slides Presentation
- Photo from the article to project on the screen
- Video clip from the broadcasted news headline
- 3x5 prepared notecards
- 1 printed out or clipped out article of the original headline
- A typed list of the three sources (minimum of 3) they used to research the headline further
- Grading rubric
Headline topics can be from local news sources or world news. The headline can be a local topic or a global issue. Topics can be related to:
- Community Events & Entertainment
- Sports
- Health & Fitness
- Finance
- Science & Technology
- Etc.,
